Build a Softer Palette

Color is only as appealing as the weave that carries it. When synthetic polyester fabrics reflect harsh glare, even expensive colors look flat. Honest fibres change with the sun.

The 60-30-10 Rule Revised for Living Rooms

Traditional interior rules suggest using 60% dominant paint, 30% upholstery, and 10% accent color. In practical everyday homes, we recommend treating texture as the percentage metric:

  • 60

    Matte & Absorbent (60%)

Linen curtains, flat-weave wool rugs, and chalky mineral wall finishes that absorb excess reverberation and light.

  • 30

    Woven Structural Grain (30%)

Textured sofa twill, boucle occasional chairs, and ribbed cotton throws that create tactile interest when resting.

  • 10

    Hard Reflective Highlights (10%)

Glazed stoneware pots, cold natural stone coasters, and unvarnished timber grains that ground the eye.

Linen Breathability
Unbleached European flax linen softens with age, does not collect static lint, and drapes naturally without stiff pleat weights.
Wool Resilience
New Zealand and Shetland wool fibers contain natural crimp and lanolin, resisting spills naturally while outlasting synthetic acrylic copies.
The Cushion Multiplier
Avoid pairs of matching showroom cushions. Mix two sizes (20" square and 14x20" lumbar) in distinct yarn gauges for lived-in comfort.
Fiber Origin Tactile Character Maintenance Note Ideal Living Room Role
Washed Belgian Linen Matte, slubbed, cooling Machine wash gentle, tumble dry low Curtain panels, loose slipcovers
Low-Pile Woven Wool Dense, warm, springy Spot clean with mild wool soap Heavy foot-traffic central rugs
Uncut Cotton Velvet Soft, light-trapping, rich Steam clean; brush against pile Single accent chair or lumbar cushions
Bleached Jute / Sisal Dry, structural, coarse Vacuum only; keep clear of spills Secondary foundation layering rugs
